Associate and Head of Engineering and Manufacturing Recruitment
Justin has had over 10 ½ years’ experience in the Engineering and Manufacturing Recruitment market, specialising in permanent technical appointments. After spending almost 10 years at ATA Recruitment, where he was the top biller for the Bristol branch for the previous 6 years – fulfilling roles from Principal Consultant to Recruitment Manager , he has joined Kingston Barnes to set up their new Engineering and Manufacturing division. Justin deals with clients from FMCG manufacturers, Assembly and niche manufacturers to Project and Service Engineering companies.
What made you choose Kingston Barnes as an employer?
After working for ATA for 10 good years, I decided that I needed a new challenge. I knew that I wanted to stay within the sector as I am extremely passionate and knowledgable about it, but didn’t want to be a just another number within a corporate PLC. After turning down several other ‘safer’ opportunities, and meeting with James, I decided that Kingston Barnes was for me. The professional and personable way that Kingston Barnes does recruitment mirrored how I believe recruitment should be done, and James’ belief in me and enthusiasm about the prospect of setting up an Engineering and Manufacturing division made the decision a no brainer.
Why did you choose a career in recruitment? Where does your passion/drive come from?
Business has always been a keen interest of mine and after 6th form I decided to study a Business degree at Aston University. During my degree I undertook a placement year with the Prince’s Trust as a Business Advisor. This involved me assessing people’s eligibility to be awarded a business grant/loan, looking at business plans, and pitching the potential business proposition to a panel of successful businessmen and women (volunteers for the Trust) – a bit like Dragons Den! I was given a lot of responsibility which I thrived upon and also gave me the experience of dealing with different people over the phone and in person. This gave me the idea that a sales role, dealing with people, would be a wise and exciting move for me. After graduating I did some research into recruitment, could see the skillset required matched mine, and applied for a few roles within the sector. Since then I’ve never looked back! I enjoy the buzz of the sales environment, working with new and existing clients to add value to their recruitment process.
What interests you about Engineering and Manufacturing? Where does your passion/drive come from?
The scope within Engineering and Manufacturing is huge. Until you work in the sector, and recruit for it, you don’t realise how big it is. From working with companies that produce plastic packaging to working with companies that design unfolding structures, the scope is endless. The challenge of recruiting the right person into the right role within a specific company really excites me – every companies culture and environment is different.
I’ve always wanted to be the best in anything I do and will always give 100%. Joining Kingston Barnes has provided me with an environment which can allow me to develop my career and potential further, working with better recruiters who do things the right way!
What is your favourite engineering project?
My favourite engineering project I have been involved in to date was recruiting for a brand new state of the art manufacturing site in Aylesbury – one of the biggest of its kind in Europe. Alpla produced the bottles (hole in the wall environment) for the Arla Dairy site next door, and I was involved from recruiting the first employee, Operations Manager, to Manufacturing, Maintenance and Quality professionals for Alpla (approx. 25 employees in total). It was a challenging and interesting project to be involved in, and something I thrived upon. Visiting the site several times over the years since gave me a real buzz, seeing how the people I had recruited had made a real difference to such an impressive site.
When you are not recruiting what do you do?
I enjoy spending time with my wife Mel, visiting good restaurants and weekends away, and the newest member of my family – our cat Joey! I am also a huge sports fan and will happily talk about or watch pretty much any sport given the opportunity! My real sporting passion is football and I am a keen Bristol City and Man United fan and regularly watch them home and away when I have a chance. I love going to live events (sport, comedy or music) and regularly go to Glastonbury festival – one of the advantages of living in the South West!
